Tooth Decay

Tooth Decay
Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is when areas of the tooth or teeth are permanently damaged and develop into tiny holes.

Cavities can be caused by a number of things, for example, sipping on sugary drinks throughout the day, brushing your teeth inadequately, or having a high intake of sugar through the foods you eat.

In some cases, there are no symptoms of tooth decay, so it’s important to see your dentist every 6 months in order for them to provide the best treatment for the tooth. However, at times patients will experience toothache if the cavities are left untreated.

In order to repair the decayed tooth you will need a filling from the dentist. If the decay has damaged a lot of the tooth structure then a crown may be recommended as a much better option for the tooth.

Ways in which you can help prevent tooth decay: • Brush twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste
• Keep sugary snacks and drinks to meal times only
• Clean between the teeth daily with floss or other interdental tools
• Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleaning of the teeth and full mouth examination
