Stranger Things is the recent Netflix hit that everyone is crazy for,
recently releasing a second season. Every fan knows the main characters
are four young teens, BUT what you may not have know about Gaten
Matarazzo who plays Dustin, is that he has a rare bone and teeth
disorder called cleidocranial dysplasia. This disorder can be inherited
and can affect the growth of collar bones, smaller frames, and open
skull sutures to name a few symptoms. Gaten has a common symptom which
is slow eruption of his permanent set of teeth. He is 14 and still has a
lot of deciduous teeth and missing teeth. At 14 we would generally
expect full adult dentition (except wisdom teeth). Also, the condition
can cause the permanent dentition to include supernumerary teeth (extra
teeth). Unless these extra teeth are removed they will crowd the adult
teeth in what already may be an underdeveloped jaw. Up to 13
supernumarary teeth have been observed!
Gaten has been raising awareness of the condition, and his new found fame has given him a great platform to do this.
