There are several causes of a dry mouth . Smoking, medications, diseases and infections, nerve damage after surgery or Injury to the head in which there is nerve damage, can all cause a dry mouth. Breathing with the mouth open is also a cause. Vomiting and diarrhea can also cause a dry mouth due to dehydration.
A dry mouth can increase the risk of gingivitis, tooth decay, mouth infections and thrush, so keeping well hydrated is so important by drinking plenty of fluids. Icey poles are also a great way especially for kids, however keep in mind to avoid the sugary ones. Giving up smoking, adjusting to breathing with mouth closed and staying well hydrated helps in treating a dry mouth.
